The Canon CP-E4 battery pack provides an extra power source to help you to do this.

The CP-E4 provides an external power source for the Canon Speedlite 550EX and 580EX flashgun ranges to give faster recycling and more flashes between battery changes.
On the 580EX range of Speedlites, a custom function can be set to determine whether the flash recycles from both the batteries internally and the external CP-E4, or just from the external unit.

The CP-E4 is as weather sealed as the Speedlite 580EX II flashgun and will maintain the weather sealing of the unit around the joints.
